Item Description
This impressively large wicker basket is a beautiful thing in and of itself; wonderfully well made with rope handles and leather / iron straps that have developed a lovely deep patina over the decades. In the centre of the lid, secured with tightly twisted wire, is a vibrant glossy blue and white enamel plaque - 'LIVE DOG WITH CARE'. Over the years I've seen a copule of these enamel plaques on their own but frustratingly always missed the opportunity of buying one. I'd never known where they originated from; I presumed a train carriage door or similar ... my imagination hadn't stretched to the possibility of something like this!
Although large in size and perfectly well ventilated, I still pity the mutt that was strapped into this for what was probably a fairly long, slow journey - rail, sea or carriage ... It is however a wonderfully preserved piece of history and probably the most unique conversation starter of a laundry basket you can buy.
This piece probably dates to the early 20th century, the basket and the enamel sign on it are both in decent order. There is historic evidence of worm holes (or similar) in the wicker work (see close up photos) and some damaged wicker, but all inline with a piece of this age.
It measures 87cm high x 92cm wide x 59cm deep - large-ish lurcher for scale, not included.
