Item Description
This sign is an excellent example of Melox's enamel advertising. The bold strapline; 'The Food of the Dogs', presumably a lovely play on H. G. Wells' 1904 book 'The Food of the Gods and How It Came to Earth'.
This sign is likely to date to the 1930s/'40s. It was produced by Chamberlain of Bow, E13 (East London) - not a common manufacturer.
It's survived the decades in remarkably good condition. The colours are so vibrant and the gloss so good it's close to looking as good as the day it was made (see the angled photos where I've tried to show this, and the image of the reverse of the sign for a little re-assurance it is a genuine piece). There are a few patches of enamel loss around the outer edges of the sign and a couple of areas around the M of Melox and a small one between the E and the L. The areas of enamel loss seem fairly 'fresh' and I would speculate that this sign had spent the majority of it's life stored away safely indoors before being fairly carelessly disturbed... This said, even with the bit of damage it would have to be considered a very good example.
It measures 66cm wide x 46cm high.
