Item Description
Here we have a fantastically original pair of antique armorial achievements, each finely hand-painted on paper and presented behind a decorative verre églomisé mount, within their original gilded frames.
The two armorial panels are executed with considerable delicacy, richly decorated with elaborate scrolling mantling, floral sprays and heraldic devices. Each achievement is surmounted by a helmet and crest and accompanied by a painted Latin motto below.
The left-hand achievement displays a lion rampant surmounted by a crest depicting a red hound with the motto “DEUS MIHI PROVIDEBAT” (“God provided for me.").
The right-hand achievement bears three animal (leopard?) heads upon a red background, within a two-tone shield. It bears the motto “SOLA VIRTUS INVICTA” (“Virtue alone is invincible”).
The pieces are likely to date to the first half of the 19th century and have clearly spent a lifetime together. The frames are showing signs of wear - the lower edge of each has darkened with time, the corners of both frames have worn, there are cracks and losses. These could be 'tidied up' by a competent restorer with relative ease but I love the faded-grandeur look and feel that they have; original, untouched and very striking.
Each piece measures 38cm high x 32.5cm wide x 4.5cm deep.
