Item Description
This near life sized papier-mâché Scottish Terrier was almost certainly a shop advertising display, though I'm not entirely sure what he was advertising... I've seen a couple of other examples (in varying conditions) so they were a 'thing' but without any branding on the dog themselves I don't know more. If anyone remembers - please let me know!
It's possible he was part of an advertisement for Buchanan's 'Black and White' whisky which used a black Scottish Terrier and a white West Highland Terrier as their mascots but I've never seen a similar West Highland variant so I'm not convinced.
Regardless of his original purpose, he's a very endearing piece of decoration. Likely to date to the 1960s/'70s he's worn nicely over the years; the original painted surface has a general sheen that dulls in the recessed areas of his fur and was worn through the paint on the higher areas giving good contrast to what would otherwise be a dark shape.
The leather studded collar is almost certainly a later addition but as it's part of his history I've left it in place. There's a small area of damage to back of one ear along with general marks and scratches but he displays very well.
He measures 34cm high x 48cm long x 16cm wide.
