Item Description
An incredibly charming thing, this scratch-built bird (is it a Kingfisher with it's crown?) balance / pendulum toy is a piece of folk art in it's own right.
A basic form, cut from thin sheet metal, painted on both sides stands on a basic frame - the lead weight at it's base means that with a gentle push the pendulum effect keeps it swinging away. With this example, it's simple bent metal stand also wobbles from side to side giving this piece a fantastic amount of movement.
These toys were made in sheds to keep children entertained, simple, basic and incredibly charming. It's developed a very authentic patina over the years. It looks like it's painted surface has faded and once side has more surface rust leaching through the paint than that the other but this is all part of it's charms.
Currently available with a second balance toy, almost certainly by the same maker depicting a cowboy on a horse.
It measures 29cm high x 19cm wide and the base is 10cm deep.
