Item Description
An incredibly charming thing, this scratch-built gun shooting cowboy on horseback balance / pendulum toy is a piece of folk art in it's own right.
A basic form, cut from thin sheet metal, painted on both sides stands on a basic frame - the lead weight at it's base means that with a gentle push the pendulum effect keeps it swinging away. With this example, it's simple bent metal stand also wobbles from side to side giving this piece a fantastic amount of movement.
These toys were made in sheds to keep children entertained, simple, basic and incredibly charming. It's developed a very authentic patina over the years - it looks like it's painted surface has faded and developed some surface craqueleur but the decoration is still clear. This example has also undergone some equally endearing repairs in the past with penny coins glued onto the lead weight for a bit of extra 'swing' and a small piece of tin can replacing one of the 'feet' that the toy stands on; it was made in a shed, it's been repaired in a shed - all very genuine and all part of the charm.
Currently available with a second balance toy, almost certainly by the same maker depicting a bird.
It measures 30cm high x 21cm wide and the base is 9cm deep.
