Item Description
James Spratt was an American entrepreneur and his company Spratt's was the first 'large-scale manufacturer of dog biscuits'.
Spratt's commissioned a fantastic range of enamel advertising in the early 20th century and plenty of different examples of their signage remain on the market today ... More unusually are these enamel advertising dog bowls. They were produced by the Patent Enamel Co. of Birmingham and date to the 1920s-'30s.
A few different examples exist, but they're fairly scarce in any form.
This particular is a personal favourite with the Spratt's lettering cleverly formed into the shape of a Scottie Dog. A more clearly legible 'Spratts' is also written in plain type on opposing sides. Simple, bold and very effective. This bowl evidences a life lived; it has enamel loss and corrosion around the upper and lower edges, most notably the loss of the lower edge under both handles. The bowl itself has heavy scratching to the enamel and some discolouration but remains water tight.
It's not the best example on the market, but this is reflected in the price.
It measures 26cm in diameter x 10.5cm high.
