Item Description
Nectar Tea's advertisements are generally found in the iconic teacup and saucer format - this is the first time I've encountered this particular example; a double-sided white on blue enamel flange sign. These signs were designed to stick out from a shop front at a 90 degree angle - visible to people walking along the pavement.
This sign was produced by the Patent Enamel Co. Ltd of 'Birmingham & London' - usually this manufacturer only lists themselves as working from Birmingham... As I've not been able to find any other comparable examples it's hard to date, though I'd guess at this being 1920s-'30s.
It's survived the decades in decent order; the original flange is present and in good condition. There's light chipping around the outer edges, some surface scratching and one side has a patch of enamel loss below the 'C' but generally the sign retains a lovely deep blue and a good surface gloss. There's a small 'patch' on the bottom edge, around the 'Patent Enamel' mark (pictured) - I suspect this is a manufacturing fault repaired at the time of making rather than later restoration.
It measures 36cm wide x 26cm high with a 4cm deep flange.
