Item Description
Volailles + Chevaline - Poultry + Horse meat.
Butchers specialising in the processing and sale of horse meat can be found in different European countries including Germany, Belgium and France. This particular sign has originated from a French butchers notable from its style as much as its subject matter.
There's something typically French about the colour-way and the style of sign-writing. Painted onto both sides of a relatively thick sheet of metal, it's simply, yet competently done - the work of the local sign writer. Some effort has gone into giving the lettering a 3D effect ... Curiously the dots above the letter i 's seems to be an afterthought - perhaps the butcher felt it wasn't obvious enough that they were i 's and insisted upon the change?
Although hard to date, it's likely that this sign dates to c.1940s/'50s. Both sides have survived the decades in decent order; a little fading, a little scratching etc but all adds character without taking away from the piece. Three hanging holes run along the top edge; one of the outer has broken away but the middle one is sufficient to display the piece.
It measures 80cm wide x 50cm high.
