Item Description
A real curiosity; this poster / certificate appears to be from an agricultural show in Warwick / Warwickshire, perhaps organised by and certainly associated with the Royal Agricultural Society of England.
The winner of the £10 prize for his wool was Mr Thomas Horton or Harnage Grange in Shrewsbury (a fair distance from Warwickshire).
Mr Horton is listed in an 1871 Shropshire directory as being a farmer at Harnage Grange. His name and address is also inscribed to the rear of an oil painting of a ram dated 1863, so I would assume this piece to be from the mid-late 19th century.
The curiosity (for me at least) of this poster is the combination of letterpress printing and hand writing. The headings are printed, the 'The' of prize hand written, seemingly on a scrap of paper pasted onto the main poster, similarly with 'wool' - Mr Horton's details are in pen and ink in the corner of the piece. I'm not sure whether this was just a provincial certificate poster presented as best as it could be or whether this was a mock up / proof that was meant to be sent to the printers for a finalised version to be made... Whatever its purpose, the mix of typefaces, styles and sizes are quite jarring but this really draws you in and makes for quite an eye-catching piece.
It's presented in a modern frame but displays well.
It measures 45cm high x 39cm wide x 2cm deep.
