Item Description
A framed hand-coloured etching by Edward Bouverie Hoyton (1900–1988) entitled 'St Ives Harbour'. Signed and titled in pencil. Some wear and scratches to gilding on frame.
Hoyton was born in Lewisham, London in 1900 and went to study printmaking at Goldsmiths College of Art alongside Graham Sutherland, Paul Drury, Eric Frazer, Robin Tanner, and William Larkins. This particular group of artists were collectively known as 'The Goldsmiths Group', and helped revive the art of original hand-made prints.
In 1926 Hoyton won a Rome Scholarship in Engraving which led to a three year period of study in Italy. 1934 saw him appointed as a lecturer at Leeds College of Art, and it was at Leeds that he met his future second wife Inez, also an artist. In 1941 the Hoytons moved to Penzance in Cornwall with Edward's appointment as Principal at the Penzance School of Art. From 1965 until 1981 he was Chairman of the St Ives Society of Artists, with whom he often exhibited. He was also a regular exhibitor at the Royal Academy in London.
