Item Description
Large Antique Wooden Gents of Leicester Station Wall Clock – A
An original railway station clock manufactured by the British company Gents & Co Ltd of Leicester. The clock has a lovely oak case, cream metal face and retained its original black metal hands. This clock was part of a run of 6 which have been salvaged after a number of years in storage. The markings to the wooden casing indicate this clock might have originally been part of a double sided clock unit.
The clock is dated based on the PUL-SYN-ETIC Serial number 581: This is a low serial number, indicating an early production date. Gents of Leicester started using the “Pulsynetic” principle around 1904. A clock with serial number 1595 was dated February 1927, and one with serial number 3273 was dated December 1931, indicating that serial number 581 is likely 1920 or pre-1920s.
The clock has retained its original PUL-SYN-ETIC slave movement mechanism this is now driven by a new battery operated impulse driver giving a lovely mechanical ‘clunk’ every 30 seconds.
Origin: South of England, Railway Station
Dimensions:
Diameter: 52cm
Depth: 9cm
Circa: 1920
Workshop Report:
The clock is in overall good condition, the case has a few layers of historical varnish, the metal face has no damage and the clock face is clean with some slight yellowing. The mechanism is driven by a new battery operated impulse driver which requires 4 x AA batteries and 6 x C batteries – supplied. These typically last 18 months – instructions supplied.
