An unusual French fruitwood linen chest with a two-door cupboard at low level, and lift-up top above. The lift-up top section is faced with a false drawer front, and the lower cupboard section is faced with a false double drawer front, to give the external impression of a three-drawer chest. It has unusual, hand-forged metal hinges to the lift-up top section, and there are escutcheons on the false drawer fronts: dummy ones on the top two 'drawers', and a genuine escutcheon and lock on the lower 'drawer', but there isn't a key to this. At some point a great deal of trouble has been taken to 'patch in' a repair below one of the handles, which adds to the feeling of age and character of this piece. The top has various age-related marks, and there are signs of historic worm (long gone, but all our furniture is treated with anti-woodworm as a matter of course). A beautiful, rustic French farmhouse linen chest.
