Item Description

This oil on canvas probably dates to around 1850, and the large size of the painting combined with the ornate gilt frame creates a very striking impression. The woman is wearing an elaborate lace bonnet and collar, and seems to be holding a pair of spectacles. The facial details in particular are extremely well executed and life-like. There are tears to the canvas in several places, with some paint loss (please refer to images in listing), so it’s not in perfect condition, but still a very impressive piece. The frame is in good condition for its age, with minimal signs of wear. N.B. This is one of a pair of portraits. The other (reference MV8024) is of a gentleman. It’s the same size and in the same frame, so they were most likely of husband and wife.
