Item Description

ANTIQUE FLORAL BEADED WALL HANGING

An extremely decorative three dimensional wall hanging sculpture made from threading tiny glass coloured beads on to a wirework frame depicting a naturalistic floral scene with flowers and foliage in an overall stylised flower shaped border. The backing is wrapped in what appears to be matching silk thread.

Known as an ‘Immortelle’, these wreaths were originally created to adorn gravesides and tombs as lasting tributes to loved ones when flowers were unavailable or too ephemeral. Today they are collected and used as unique pieces folk art, displayed as decorative sculptural wall hangings.

The wreath originates from France, possibly in Chauny or Montbard which were regional centres for this type of bead work.

This example probably dates from the late 19th century period.

The wreath is in good vintage condition with no serious structural issues and only minor wear commensurate with age.

Approximate measurements: 117cm high x 91cm wide x 28cm deep.
