Item Description

ANTIQUE AMERICAN OAK ROCKING CHAIR

A stylish design with simple lines which would suit any number of interior settings from modern and minimal to eclectic and and antique.

Excellent quality, the piece feels very well made and built to last, made from fabulous and characterful oak with beautiful medullary rays.

A generous shaped saddle seat and equally generous arms.

Probably dating from the first part of the 20th century, circa 1900-1920s in date.

The chair is unsigned but it is very much in the manner of Gustav Stickley and almost certainly American in origin.

Gustav Stickley (1858-1942) was perhaps the most influential figure in the American Arts and Crafts movement. From around 1900 he produced furniture with the philosophy that every home deserved pieces that satisfied a real need, were solid, honest and made with uncompromising craftsmanship. His ‘Mission’ pieces have become some of the most recognisable and cherished pieces of American design.

The chair is in good vintage condition and feels solid and sturdy. There is cosmetic wear throughout commensurate with age including scratches, scuffs and areas with some variation in colour. There is also some natural shrinkage in the joints present but this doesn’t seem to affect the structure of the piece.

Approximate measurements: 92cm high x 79cm deep x 68cm wide. The seat height is roughly 43cm at the front centre.
