Item Description

VINTAGE CERAMIC SCULPTURE

Depicting a human skull on a plinth with an iguana climbing out of a hole in its head.

Extremely well modelled and skilfully made, partly lifelike with a hint of stylised Mexican folk art day of the dead thrown in. Made from hand modelled clay which has been glazed.

The sculpture is unsigned but appears to be by a talented hand and probably originates from Mexico or possibly surrounding areas. It probably dates from the mid 20th Century period.

The iguana climbing out of a skull is a motif that dates back to the indigenous history and art of Mesoamerica (such as Aztec and Maya civilisations). The skull is not a macabre symbol of doom but a representation of the cycle of life, death, and rebirth. It acts as a portal to ancestral knowledge and spiritual renewal. The iguana, endemic to this region, is historically viewed as a solar animal connected to the sun gods. It symbolises primordial energy, survival, and deep alignment with the earth. When intertwined, in regional folk art—such as Mexican ceramic work or Day of the Dead imagery—the iguana crawling over or carved onto a skull signifies that life dynamically continues and thrives even in the realm of the ancestors.

The sculpture is in great vintage condition with no serious structural issues and with wear commensurate with age. A couple of the iguanas spines have chipped off.

Approximate measurements: 43cm high x 20cm wide x 23cm deep.
