Item Description
' Abstract Composition ' Oil on Canvas Painting by Halima Nalecz (1914 - 2008). Signed Verso, C1950. Nalecz saw colour as medicine, which is exemplified by this work with its exquisite palette of bold secondary tones. Presented within a hand-painted wooden triple-frame.
Halima Nalecz was born Halima Maria Krzywicz-Nowohonska in 1914 in Poland, and spent the majority of her youth as a political refugee, moving around Eastern Europe and the Middle East until she arrived in England in 1947.
As a co-founder of the New Vision Gallery in London in 1956, and later her own Drian Gallery in Portland Place, she forged a unique path through the London art scene and worked for more than 40 years as a promoter of new and emerging artists. She helped to launch many important careers, as well as being an accomplished artist herself.
Her work evolved from abstract to figurative, in a style instantly recognisable and clearly pointing to her Eastern European roots. She painted spontaneously with a natural rhythm, executed rapidly, as though in flight from the real world.
