Style: Rare 1844 Coalbrookdale cast iron painted doorstop. Features a whimsical relief of a sleeping cherub and dog nestled within an oak tree themed handle design of acorns and branches. Includes original foundry stamp, serial number, and dated casting mark on the reverse.
Story: Before the age of climate control, heavy cast iron 'door porters' from the legendary Coalbrookdale foundry were essential tools for improving household airflow. What began as simple, utilitarian doorstops in the 18th century flourished during the Victorian era, transforming into ornate, highly collectible antiques celebrated for their sculptural beauty.
