Item Description
Style: A wonderfully characterful, three tiered provincial hanging wall shelf, masterfully hand carved from rich walnut. This rustic piece features intricate, detailed carvings of birds with their nests, entwined with lush grapevines and leaves. Two shelves have words engraved on the underside of them - 'Ye' and 'Sou', which could represent the initials of the carver, or part of an old archaic French phrase. While it shows the charming patina of age, including historical woodworm (fully treated by us for peace of mind) and various past repairs, the shelf remains strong, sturdy, and ready to hang with brass fixtures on the back. A true statement piece steeped in rustic charm.
Story: Long before they graced the walls of cosy country homes, hand carved French shelves and étagères began as statement pieces in opulent chateaus. Spanning the 17th through the 19th centuries, master woodworkers shaped local materials into functional art. Designed to hold everything from delicate porcelain to cherished clocks and relics, these shelves laid the foundational charm of historic French decor.
