Item Description
Style: A near pair of small Meiji period (1868-1912) cloisonne enamel vases. Each has a copper body enamelled in turquoise blue with red, pink, dark blue and white chrysanthemums, entwined with green foliage and yellow and white butterflies.
The jars have baluster bodies, curved circular necks and bases topped and tailed with red and dark blue circular designed rims. The metal work on the designs is very fine. There is some minor damage to the interior enamel and a couple of tiny chips of enamel missing on the exteriors on both pieces.
Story: Small cloisonné enamel jars, especially those set against turquoise backgrounds and adorned with butterfly motifs are a beloved form of decorative art in both China and Japan. The technique involves thin strips of metal in shapes applied to the base and these shapes filled with liquid enamel. Firing in a kiln and intense polishing results in a smooth surface.
