Item Description
A Pair of elegant side chairs of sound and practical construction, conforming to the characteristic designs supplied by Philip Webb for Morris & Co. The frames are executed in turned wood, stained black, and raised upon four sturdy supports. To the back is fitted a gallery composed of numerous turned spindles. Both chairs have seats of woven natural rush, the material remaining in good condition.
A notable example of Arts and Crafts furniture, the Sussex chair was conceived around 1860 by Philip Webb for Morris, Marshall, Faulkner & Co. (later Morris & Co.). These distinctive rush-seated, turned-frame chairs drew inspiration from local rural Sussex designs and became renowned for their elegant simplicity, functional form, and accessible price point.
