Item Description
A very sweet Staffordshire flat back spill vase of a charming couple asleep under a blossom tree with a curious bird gently laying some oak leaves as a blanket over the couple. In really good condition and we've added an inner recycled plastic vial so that it can be used as a vase. We'll send it out for Mother's Day with a small posy of fresh spring flowers.
Staffordshire spill vases are 19th-century English earthenware, predominantly Victorian, designed as decorative, often figural containers for "spills"—paper or wood tapers used to transfer fire from hearths. The "flatback" figures (often with a, hollow tree-trunk holder) became popular mantel decorations for middle-class homes as matches were expensive and 'spills' were used for lighting candles, pipes etc from the fire.
