Item Description
100% Wool Baluch Rug, circa 1960s
Woven by hand in the tradition of the Baluch people, this rug carries the mark of something made to last centuries - and the depth of colour it has achieved over six decades proves it. The Baluch were nomadic weavers of exceptional instinct - their rugs were not designed at a drawing board but grew from memory, geometry committed to the fingers and passed through generations. Every knot in this piece is a small act of that continuity.
The palette speaks the language of the desert and the dusk: deep, saturated crimson, charcoal ground and near-black indigo, punctuated by the ivory accents that Baluch weavers used to illuminate their intricate repeat patterns. A procession of five bold diamond medallions runs the length of the piece. The surrounding field is dense with stylised geometric motifs: hooked forms, arrow-heads and repeating angular botanical shapes that fill the field in a rhythm that feels both ancient and endlessly contemporary.
The wool is the real story: hand-spun and dense underfoot in a way that modern rugs simply cannot replicate. It has a low, tight pile that has aged with distinction - alive in different lights.
In the home, it belongs in a hallway above all else, where its format and its personality are perfectly matched - particularly one with tile or stone flooring, where the depth of crimson will sing against a pale or cool surface. It would work equally well along a corridor or landing or as a generous bedside runner. Interior designers have long favoured Baluch rugs as the piece that gives a neutral interior its backbone - the element that grounds the room, adds warmth and zones a space.
