Item Description

Style: A pair of iconic Phillip Webb for Morris and Co. ebonised beech framed Sussex Chairs showcasing classic spindle back turned design and durable woven rush seats, balanced upon turned, tapering legs and stretchers. One of the chairs has lately been outfitted with a new rush seat. The surfaces show lovely, honest wear to the ebonised finish with worn areas, a testament to their history and a feature that deepens their appeal.

Seat height 42cm

Story: Inspired by a traditional Sussex country chair, Philip Webb designed the iconic Sussex chair around 1860. Featuring a distinctive turned frame and rush seat, it became a massive commercial success, produced in large quantities from roughly 1865 until the 1920s. Inspired by a simpler, pre-industrial past, this Morris and Co. classic was a sensation in its time and remains a defining icon of the Arts and Crafts movement.
