Exceptionally scarce late 19th century "Pelican In Her Piety" Bottle Opener. Approximately 5.5 inches in length & 1.75 inches in width. Solid brass with a cast iron head, good overall original condition. English made although not stamped as such. A pelican in her piety is an associated christian image of a pelican piercing her own breast bone to feed her own blood to her young, sacrificing her own well being for the sake of her brood. A very powerful image in its own right, early Christians adopted this depiction by the 2nd century & used it in text & images. The last image shows the depiction in a early stained glass window in Scotland.
