Item Description
19th Century Dendritic Mochaware Earthenware Pottery Toilet Cistern Pull.
An unusual and scarce English late 19th century earthenware pottery toilet cistern pull. Decorated to the lower body with the distinctive dendritic mochaware technique, with fine black branching, fern-like decoration against a warm honey-coloured glazed covered ground.
The shaped body features impressed “PLEASE PULL” lettering to one face, a dark brown glazed collar to the top and a small rounded dendritic covered terminal to the base. Retaining its original through body chain suspension hook.
An indistinct impressed mark, possibly the letter R or B, is present on the upper collar.
Mochaware is principally associated with utilitarian drinking vessels and tablewares of the late 18th and 19th centuries. Its use on a pottery toilet cistern pull is considerably less commonly encountered, making this a particularly interesting example of early English sanitary pottery. Good overall original condition, with only very minor top edge surface nibbles and age-related glaze crazing. Top hook still strong enough for the intended use purpose. Approximately 5.25 inches in overall height including the hook. Weight 137g. No hanging main chain supplied. Price includes UK inland tracked delivery. Returns are accepted within 3 days of receipt.
