Item Description
A striking and unusually sculptural studio glass charger by British glassmaker Barry Cullen, signed and dated 1981.
The shallow circular form features a glossy black central boss surrounded by dense opaque-white spiral trailing, suspended within clear glass and bordered by a broad oxblood-red rim. The changing density and direction of the white threads create a compelling sense of movement and optical depth, suggesting an abstract eye.
Viewed from an angle, the charger’s gently dished profile intensifies the refraction of the pattern, making it as much a piece of glass sculpture as a functional vessel. It would make a dramatic centrepiece displayed flat, upright on a stand or securely wall-mounted.
Cullen began working with glass in 1969, during the formative years of the British studio-glass movement. Although much of his recorded work consists of smaller vessel forms, this charger demonstrates a particularly bold and assured use of scale, colour and graphic composition.
Incised “Barry Cullen” to the underside, together with what appears to be the date ’81 and a separate work number.
