Japanese Meiji Parquetry Metamorphic Scholar’S Writing Box, C.1900

A beautifully detailed Japanese Meiji-period metamorphic scholar’s box, ingeniously designed to transform from a compact tabletop cabinet into a traditional low writing desk.

Dating to c.1900, the piece is richly decorated throughout with contrasting wood parquetry and geometric marquetry, creating an intricate patchwork of grain, tone and pattern across the top, sides, drawers and cupboard door. Dark metal mounts, hinges, escutcheons and shaped swing handles provide a handsome contrast to the warm timber.

The cabinet separates into two storage sections, with the removable top positioned between them to form the writing surface. One section incorporates four graduated drawers, while the other has a cupboard enclosing additional drawers, together with a further drawer below.

When closed, the components fit neatly together to form a compact and highly decorative cabinet measuring just 35.5 cm wide × 28 cm high × 25 cm deep. Opened out, the transformation reveals the ingenuity of its construction and gives the piece considerable sculptural presence.

Both practical and decorative, it reflects the Japanese tradition of highly considered furniture for compact interiors. Today it works equally well as a collector’s piece, tabletop cabinet, decorative object or occasional low writing desk.
