Item Description
A good quality, 19th century copper mould made by Benhams. This is marked with the orb and cross symbol used by Benhams above a pattern number “476”. To the opposite side is a workman’s mark in the shape of a heart. It is also stamped “JAMES GRAY & SON 35 GEORGE ST. EDINBURGH” and this company would have been the retailer. James Gray and Son, a furnishing ironmongers, was established in 1818 and continued until taken over in 1914. The mould is well made, from a heavy gauge of copper, and it dates from c.1870. The design consists of six reeded columns with small dome tops. It is in excellent condition. The tinning to the interior is slightly worn but the mould could still be used.
