Item Description
A very good quality, 19th century, French copper braising pan. Braising pans were designed to sit on the range cooker, or on the fire, and the deep rim of the lid would be filled with coals so that the contents cooked from both the bottom and the top. It was the original form of slow cooker. This example, which dates from c.1860, is well made, from a very heavy gauge of copper, and it has castellated seams around the base and up the side. There are square form, copper handles to the sides and to the lid is a flat, strap handle. It is in very good condition and, although the interior has not been recently re-tinned, it is still in very good, usable condition.
