Item Description
A rare, early 19th century, copper mould in the shape of a tortoise. This is probably French and it dates from c.1820. However, the amusing depiction of the tortoise is very similar to examples that we have had in 18th century, English pottery moulds. The mould is made from a quite a substantial gauge of copper and the moulding has very good depth and detail. There is a steel loop attached to the end of the mould so that it can hang when not in use and this is original to the piece. Unfortunately there is a piece of the rim of the mould missing. This can be seen in the images. The tinning is very worn so the mould is now purely for decorative purpose and could not be used.
Dimensions: Length 20cm. Width 15.2cm. Height 6cm.
