Item Description
A rare, 19th century, Wedgwood black basalt figure of Bacchante. This is marked to the base, “WEDGWOOD” and “BACCHANTE”, and it dates from c.1860. Bacchante was a priestess and a female follower of Bacchus the Roman God of wine. She is depicted here moving freely with bunches of grapes on a staff over her shoulder, further bunches of grapes in a tambourine at her foot and bells in her right hand. The figure is very well modelled, with excellent detail, and it is in perfect condition.
Dimensions: Height 39 cm. Length 34cm. Width 18cm.
