Item Description

A good quality, 19th century, black basalt bust of Lord Byron. In the mid 19th century Wedgwood produced a series of large library busts, in black basalt, which included prominent authors and classical figures. This bust is marked “WEDGWOOD” to the socle and the reverse of the bust is impressed “BYRON”. Lord George Gordon Byron was a British poet and one of the leading figures of the Romantic movement. He lived from 1788 until 1824. The bust dates from c.1860. There is also an inscription on the reverse of the bust which reads “To Simon with love from Aunty Betty”. This could possibly be removed of required, as it is only written in pencil, but we felt that it was part of the busts history.
The bust is well modelled and naturalistic. There is one small chip to the base of the reverse, which can be seen in the images. Other than this it is in very good condition.
Dimensions: Height 35.5cm. Width across the shoulders 25cm. Depth 15cm.
Price includes postage within the U.K. Shipping to the U.S.A. add £50. Most of Western Europe add £25.
