Item Description

A rare and highly characterful 19th-century cobbler’s bench, retaining its original leather straps and offering a fascinating glimpse into the working life of the travelling cobbler.

With its simple, functional construction and beautifully aged appearance, the bench has a wonderfully sculptural quality. Originally created as a practical piece of working equipment, its form has now become as interesting aesthetically as it was useful historically.

The survival of these benches is particularly remarkable. Many early cobblers worked an itinerant lifestyle, travelling from place to place to offer their skills and carrying their relatively modest working equipment with them. This example therefore represents not simply a piece of furniture, but a tangible piece of 19th-century social and working history.

The original leather straps remain, adding considerably to the authenticity and visual appeal of the piece. The combination of worn timber, aged leather and simple construction creates the atmospheric quality that makes genuine primitive and folk-art furniture so desirable.

Today, its low and substantial form makes it particularly versatile. It would make an exceptional antique coffee table, occasional table or simply be displayed as a sculptural piece of folk art within an interior. A wonderful conversation piece with a strong sense of history and an unmistakable rustic character.
