Italian Terracotta Weathered Bust Of Sappho – Classical Greek Sculpture

A striking Italian terracotta bust of Sappho, modelled in the classical Greek manner and inspired by ancient sculpture of the Hellenistic period.

This elegant piece depicts the poetess Sappho in an idealised form, with softly rendered features, downcast gaze, and beautifully worked wavy hair. The composition closely follows traditional classical “female head” types, often associated with both Sappho and Aphrodite in later artistic interpretation.

Crafted in iron-rich terracotta, the bust has developed a naturally weathered surface with attractive tonal variation and areas of darkened patina, enhancing its antique character. The material and finish are consistent with Impruneta-type Italian terracotta, long associated with high-quality sculptural and garden pieces.

The reverse bears an impressed maker’s mark to the centre of the base, likely indicating the producing workshop, although it remains indistinct. Such marks are typical of Italian terracotta studios.
