Item Description
A very rare 19th century child's alphabet plate featuring characters from Punch & Judy. The plate is made of earthenware and is transfer decorated with hand colouring. It has a border of the letters of the alphabet round the rim and was intended as a learning aid to help children remember their alphabet. What makes this plate special is the transfer image of a scene from a Punch & Judy puppet show. Dog Toby can be seen biting Mr Punch's nose while the Clown looks on in glee. Punch deserved to have his nose bitten because he threw his baby out of the window and was always ready to use his slapstick on the other characters, including his poor wife Judy.
Punch & Judy originated as part of the Commedia dell'Arte in Italy. The characters and the familiar puppet show first appeared in England in 1662, where it was very popular. The image on this plate was taken from a booklet of the story of Punch & Judy published by F Warne & Co in around 1870. The plate dates to shortly after this.
The plate bears no maker's marks but was probably made in England in approximately 1870 to 1880.
It is in generally good condition with just a little crazing and minor browning to the glaze.
