Item Description
A wonderful primitive folk art watercolour painting of Charles Deacon Peace in his military uniform, dating to the 1840s. It is painted on paper and Peace's name is written in elaborate script above. The painting is beautifully if naively done and Peace looks very dapper. It is framed behind glass in a later frame. There is a little fading to the lighter paint colours and minor browning to the paper. Peace was born on 25th December 1809 to William & Mary Peace of Netherseal in South Derbyshire. Forces War Records show that his service number was 431, and that he was a Private in the 2nd Regiment of Life Guards between 1841 and 1851. The painting shows him wearing his uniform from this time. The regiment was based in Regents Park in London and at this time was engaged in maintaining public order in London.
