Item Description
A rare 19th century writhen glass laboratory stirring rod, probably made in the Nailsea area. The rod is made of solid, hand-blown glass with a twisted or writhen pattern to the outside. The glass has a pale green tint and the rod is pleasingly weighted and tactile to hold. This is an unusual survivor from an age of great scientific endeavour and discovery. Today it would be ideal to use as a stylish paperweight.
It is in excellent condition.
There is a similar stirring rod in the collection of the Science Museum here.
