Item Description

A 1920's black and silver Egyptian Assuit shawl, with diamond shaped geometric panels and a central panel of stylised figures.

In very good condition, one small border hole.

Assuit is a netting fabric embroidered with metal. The embroidery is done by threading wide needles with flat strips of metal, either nickel silver, copper or brass, which is threaded through the holes in the net, folded over, cut and flattened. The fabric is also called tulle-bi-telli, an Arabic term meaning “net with metal. Typical patterns include geometric figures, plants, birds, people and camels.

It has been made in the Asyut region of Upper Egypt since the late 19th century, although the concept of metal embroidery dates back to ancient Egypt, as well as other areas of the Middle East, Asia, India and Europe. It became very popular with the fascination surrounding the discovery of King Tut’s tomb in 1922 and the geometric motifs were well suited to the Art Deco style of the time.

240cm long, 60cm wide.
