Item Description
W.D. & H.O. Wills was a British tobacco importer and manufacturer formed in Bristol, England. It was the first UK company to mass-produce cigarettes.
Gold Flake was initially produced by Stephen Mitchell & Son of Glasgow but in 1901 W.D. & H.O. Wills took over production.
"Gold Flake" refers to the 'bright, rich, golden tobacco' used in the cigarettes.
Dating to the 1930s, this 5ft long enamel 'banner' sign is a reasonable example of it's type ... I would suggest that it's spent the majority of its life displayed outside which has resulted in enamel loss / corrosion predominantly around the mounting holes + outer edges. All of the corners except the lower right are missing and there's heavier corrosion around the middle mounting holes upper and lower. Despite all of this the sign retains a good surface gloss (so much so that it's difficult to photograph without getting glare - hence the bright spots on either end in the photos) and vibrant colours. I have mounted it to a basic wooden frame for ease of display / hanging and it can be hung with the attached mirror plates or removed from the framework and fixed directly to the wall. It displays well.
It measures 5' / 152.5cm wide x 15" / 38cm high
