Item Description
Allsopp's was founded in 1807 in Burton, Staffordshire, England when Samuel Allsopp bought his uncle's 18th century brewery. Through the 19th century Samuel's sons Charles + Henry grew the business to being the second largest in the country. In 1882 Henry's son (another Samuel Allsopp) took over but the brewery wasn't as successful under his control as it was when his father + uncle were running things. By 1911 the company went into receivership and under the control of the receivers in 1935 Samuel Allsopp & Sons merged with Ind Coope Ltd to form Ind Coope and Allsopp Ltd ...
He we see a late 19th / early 20th century poster from the brewery - produced during the era of Samuel Allsopp & Sons. The design, an enlargement of a beer bottle label, is wonderfully eye catching and features the raised right hand that later becomes synonymous with Ind Coope's advertising.
At some point fairly early on in the poster's life it has been pasted onto a thin sheet of plywood and has developed it's wear since.
There is a stuck on badge of "Napoleon Emperor" on the left side of the label - presumably related to the Paris Gold Medal claim. A round place holder on the opposing side remains blank.
The poster has some fading and some losses but looks all the better for it. It displays beautifully on the board and can be placed on a shelf or some holes to allow hanging could easily be drilled.
It measures 62.5cm high x 53cm wide.
