Item Description
Camp Coffee was created in 1885 by Campbell Paterson (1851–1927) of R. Paterson & Son in Glasgow. It's coffee-and-chicory syrup , originally intended as a concentrate that could be diluted to make coffee for drinking (when coffee making equipment would have been cumbersome and expensive) it has since been primarily used in baking.
Produced in 1937, this vibrant enamel sign is a fine example of enamel advertising from the period. There's lovely shading to the lettering that gives it a rounded look / feel, punchy colours and a fantastic image of a bugle declaring that Camp Coffee 'is the best'!
This sign has survived the decades in good order, retaining a lovely surface gloss (see angled photo where I've tried to demonstrate this). There are some patches of enamel loss and a bit of corrosion along the lower edge of the sign but nothing that affects the legibility or impact of the piece. It's been mounted to a basic wooden framework for ease of hanging though can also be directly mounted to the wall using the original hanging holes.
It measures 40" / 101.5cm wide x 30" / 76cm high
