Item Description
A really rare survivor, this large + vibrant, three-panel showcard / counter sign was produced by English food company Crosse & Blackwell for the 1953 Coronation of Queen Elizabeth II.
Crosse & Blackwell were one of the first companies to secure a royal warrant from Queen Victoria in 1837 and this piece clearly shows that the company were very proud of their royal connections...
This counter sign is made from printed paper on board with two fold-out 'wings' and a concertina back section with a fold-out supporting leg. It's an impressive piece of mid-century advertising and wouldn't have left the grocers with much counter space! Obviously only a limited run of these would've been produced in the coronation year and I doubt there are many others left , certainly not in such good, bright condition.
There are a few small scuffs and tears, a little wear to the paper hinges for the fold out wings and a small 'impact' to the top middle - just above the late King George VI's royal warrant, but generally this would have to be considered a very decent example.
The piece measures 75cm high, when opened out to a 'normal' display width (as per photos) it's around 78cm wide / 35cm deep and when closed it's 45cm wide.
