Item Description

A lovely, vibrant advertising showcard for Crosse & Blackwell's 'Fresh Fruit Jams' with a gorgeous illustrated scene of a ceramic jam jar and a basket overflowing with strawberries.

Crosse & Blackwell were one of the first companies to secure a royal warrant from Queen Victoria in 1837 and this piece clearly shows that the company were very proud of their royal connections with the royal warrant displayed on the illustration of a wax seal on the left side and on the paper label of the jam jar.

The royal warrant displayed is to 'his majesty' so likely either King Edward VII (1901–1910) or King George V (1910–1936). So, a nice early piece of paper advertising. It's survived the decades in reasonable order; the colours remain fantastically vibrant. The edges of the showcard are a little battered and there's a little discolouration around the lower right corner but generally the piece displays well.
Curiously to the reverse is a pasted print of 'Beauty's Bower, presented with the Sunday Companion, 1921' - I'd guess that the showcard was repurposed as a backing board for the display / framing of the print. Perhaps this is what kept the original advertisement away from sunlight and in such good, bright condition.

The piece measures 38cm wide x 32cm high.
