Item Description
A wonderful piece of folk art; this scratch-built wooden model of The Cauliflower Free House pub is utterly charming.
With such specific detailing, I'd imagine that The Cauliflower Free House was an actual pub - or that this model was based on an actual pub with a different name, though sadly I can't find anything that looks like a match.
The model is made of a solid block of wood with additional blocks for the porch, roof and chimneys. There's a thin layer of tin for the roof of the dormer windows and hand-painted, tin advertising signs are fixed to the sides and under the front windows. The rear has brick-patterned paper stuck on with painted door and windows. The detail is wonderful, though naively executed.
The advertising signage featured would have been issued in the 1940s and I'd suggest that this model dates to around the same time, perhaps into the 1950s?
It would seem the piece has spend a large part of it's life by a fire and the heat has blistered it's surface lacquer, giving the model a lovely antique looking surface patina. It's in good order, there are some scuffs and scratchers to the painted surface - but all a part of it's charm. The only 'damage' being a missing top to one of the metal lanterns on the front...
The model measures 32cm wide x 22cm high x 23cm deep.
