Item Description
Antique Art Deco Anglepoise Table Magnifier by N&B Ltd
A fabulous Art Deco period table magnifier with the anglepoise build in the original black finish with chrome mounts and thick oblong lens. The base is heavy and solid in cast iron and has a lovely fluted sectional shape. It also has the stamped makers mark ‘ N&B Ltd Made in England’ in red on the base.
The Anglepoise lamp was designed by George Carwardine (1887-1948), an automotive engineer who designed a new type of spring, which could be moved easily in every direction, but also remain rigid when held in position. Terry produced the first version of the Anglepoise lamp, the 1208, in 1934 with four springs. It proved so popular that two years later Terry introduced a domestic version with three springs and an Art Deco-inspired three tier base, which looked more stylish than the single tier base of the 1208. This magnifier is a direct relation to that lamp and has all of the same attributes.
A characterful and practical decorative piece.
Origin: England
Circa: 1930s
Workshop Report: The condition is good for its age – the black finish has faded in age and the chrome mounts, springs have surface discolouration – see photos – which give it a great aged patina and character. The magnifier moves freely in all positions.
As with all our products, this product is an original vintage item so there are signs of wear from use.
