Item Description
1930’s GYF Pretzel Back Original Bentwood Chairs – Pair.
The story of GYF is a bit sketchy but we know GYF produced very few models and this was their main chair, components were bought partly from Luterma (Estonia) but assembled, finished and branded in France GYF at the GYF factory Givry Fourchamboult (Nievre). The process of steam bending beech to create elegant chairs was discovered and developed by Thonet, but when its patents expired in 1869 many companies including Luterma launched production. Luterma was one of the brands marketed by Estonian factory A.M. Luther which was founded in the late 19th Century in Tallinn. Luthers production was principally in Estonia but they also had factories in France for local market production. At the time of the Bauhaus movement Walter Gropius and Marcel Breuer worked with the factory to develop various models. These chairs date from the 1940’s, a simple classic shape with a beautiful rich colour and elegant grill shaped backs and seats. We service and rejuvenate each chair before it leaves our workshop and we deliver chairs of excellent quality.
