Item Description
Titled 'La Duquesa de Alba' ('The Duchess of Alba') by the artist, this unique piece is a response to Francisco de Goya's The White Duchess (1795), a masterpiece which depicts the 13th Duchess of Alba, María Cayetana de Silva. Goya and the Duchess are rumoured to have had a romantic relationship, which is certainly suggested by some of his depictions of her. This contemporary piece by Cristina Santander brilliantly represents this lady's eccentric personality - her wild black hair is in striking contrast with her white dress, which is again dotted with bursts of vibrant red. As in Goya's portrait, the Duchess' small white dog also has a bow around its leg. Cristina Santander experiments with textures and techniques to create a bold, daring image. Cristina Santander is a prominent Argentinian Postwar & Contemporary artist known for her highly expressive paintings, drawings and prints. Santander's work has been exhibited in a number of prestigious institutions, including the Reina Sofia in Madrid, National Library of Paris, National Library of Buenos Aires, the Iberia Collection and the Estampa Collection.
