Story: These glass lanterns are known in India as Handis or Hundis, taking their name from traditional cooking vessels. First produced in Europe and exported to India in the 19th century, they were a popular lighting choice for palaces and manor homes. The lamps were designed with a glass lid to trap soot from the candles or oil burners inside, preventing damage to the ceilings.
